VINTAGE FRINGE

Vintage Tours Southbank

Online city guide The Vintage Guide to London and Penny Dreadful Vintage boutique had teamed up to transport you back to 1951 and the original Festival of Britain. Their twice daily tours of the Southbank evoked the spirit and splendour of the Festival of Britain - dubbed "a tonic for the nation" - explored its cultural context, architectural grandeur and long-term legacy. We found out how the festival site would have looked like back then, what attractions visitors could have expected, heard anecdotes and personal memories about the Festival and the Southbank site and discover its lasting influence on design and British culture.

Tours were twice daily - at 11 and 14: 30.
They were free to attend. Meeting point was at the riverside entrance to the Royal Festival Hall (next to Foyles).
Peter Blake CCA Art Bus

The CCA Art Bus was thrilled to be returning to Vintage. The art bus is a mobile work of art designed by Sir Peter Blake, it is also a mobile art gallery. Sir Peter designed the bus in classic pop art style, with the aim of creating a rock 'n' roll tour bus for art and artists - being on board is like taking a trip back in time to the swinging sixties! You could hop on board to see an exhibition of artwork by the Godfather of Pop Art including his iconic 'Sgt.Pepper' in our top deck gallery, or put your feet up in the lower deck groovy lounge area. Sir Peter was on board over the course of the weekend... along with a few other surprises.

Pink Bus

Fri 29 – Sun 31 July
In response to today's throwaway society, artists Victoria Brook and Caroline Fletcher have created The Pink Bus. A double-decker treasure trove, the Bus has been transformed using rescued and recycled once-loved possessions otherwise destined for the landfill. Climb aboard and explore this cavern of kitsch, crammed with discarded bric-a-brac to relive memories of past decades and rediscover long-forgotten curios. Canoodle in Love Corner, complete with Mills and Boon wallpaper, snuggle up in the double bed, and marvel at the tasteless portrait gallery that leads you up to the junk-adorned top deck, which doubles up as a cosy performance space for live music, poetry, story-telling and stand-up comedy.
‘The Pink Bus is decorated with the most insane layers of kitsch. Imagine a public transport system provided by the cast of Abigail's Party and which peaks in a minibar wallpapered with Demis Roussos LP covers. The whole joint reeks, spiritually, of advocaat.’
Caitlin Moran, The Times
The Pink Bus continues its UK tour, delighting visitors from the Edinburgh Fringe to Glastonbury. One of its many stops was the banks of the Thames where it brings its unique retro charm Southbank Centre's Vintage Festival.

Chap Olympiad

Fri 29-Sun 31 July
The Chap Olympiad has been Britain’s most eccentric sporting event since 2005. It is a sporting contest for the unathletic, the unfit and the exceptionally well-dressed. Individual events test essential Chappish skills such as the ability to wield an umbrella while riding a bicycle, accurately toss a trilby on to a hat stand and cause a lady to swoon through caddish behaviour. Points were awarded for panache, archly-raised eyebrows and maintaining an immaculate crease in one’s trousers. Breaking a sweat, grunting or vulgar displays of victorious pride are penalised. Any contestant yielding a negative result in tests for alcohol content in the blood was immediately disqualified. For more info on The Chap at Vintage click here.
